« Последна публикация от Bellroll33 - юли 12, 2019, 10:07:10 am »
SAN DIEGO -- Other than one bad pitch, Chicago Cubs left-hander Travis Wood had a pretty good night. Wood came within five outs of pitching his first career shutout before allowing Carlos Quentins pinch-hit, two-run home run, and Chicago held on to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Saturday night. Wood (5-4) hit an RBI single and Luis Valbuena homered for the Cubs, who bounced back from an 11-1 loss Friday night. Wood allowed two runs and three hits in 7 1-3 innings, struck out three and walked two. "I felt good all game," Wood said. "I made a bad pitch there to Quentin. I wanted a cutter in, but didnt quite get it all the way in there and he got through it. But other than that everything was working pretty good all game." Quentin, who missed the previous four games with a groin injury, hit an 86 mph pitch an estimated 405 feet off the left-field facade with one out in the eighth to chase Wood. Quentin has five career pinch homers and two in one week. Yasmani Grandal was aboard on a one-out walk. Other than that, "my fastball was locating down and I got some quick outs there," Wood said. "All in all, no complaints other than one pitch, but thats going to happen." Quentin also hit a two-run, pinch homer last Saturday at Colorado. He hurt his groin on Sunday and hadnt played until Saturday nights appearance. "Thats a hard thing to do to pinch-hit -- one of the hardest roles in our game to come off the bench without playing and go step in the batters box against pitcher and hit a home run," manager Bud Black said. "That is hard to do and he has done it twice in a week. "When Carlos does that, that is what we expect," Black said. "He is a dynamic offensive player and our team changes." Problem is, the Padres havent seen much of Quentin this year. He missed the first 39 games after starting the season on the disabled list with a bone bruise in his left knee. "He makes us better," Black said. "Hes arguably our best offensive player each and every night he is in the game." Valbuena extended his hitting streak to eight games when he drove an 88 mph fastball from Billy Buckner into the right field seats with one out in the sixth. It was his third. Nate Schierholtz doubled to right with two outs. The Padres intentionally walked Darwin Barney to get to Wood, who singled up the middle to drive in Schierholtz. Valbuena also scored in the fourth, reaching on a walk, advancing on Welington Castillos single and coming in on Schierholtzs base hit. Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances. Buckner (0-1) started in place of Andrew Cashner, who is on the disabled list with a sore right elbow. Buckners contract was purchased earlier Saturday from Triple-A El Paso. He allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out four and walked three. NOTES: In a pregame ceremony, the Padres honoured first responders involved in fighting last weeks wildfires. The players and coaches formed two lines in the outfield and greeted the first responders as they walked in from the warning track. ... Cashner played long toss for the first time since going on the disabled list, retroactive to May 15. Cashner will throw again Sunday. . RHP Tim Stauffer pitched well enough in Fridays win over the Cubs to earn another start. It will come on Wednesday at Arizona. . Newly acquired LHP Troy Patton, acquired from Baltimore in Saturdays trade for C Nick Hundley, will complement LHP Alex Torres in the bullpen. He should arrive in San Diego on Sunday. . Cubs OF Justin Ruggiano could rejoin the team on the road trip; hes been on the DL since April 24 with a strained hamstring. Ruggiano played consecutive games in Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and Friday. . Padres RHP Ian Kennedy (2-6, 3.79) faces Cubs RHP Jason Hammel (5-2, 2.91) in Sundays series finale. Tremaine Edmunds Womens Jersey .B. -- Canadas Rachel Homan had ideal preparation for the playoffs at the Ford World Curling Championships with a pair of hard-fought wins over tenacious opponents Thursday. Cody Ford Youth Jersey . And he said Sunday that players believe nobody in Sterlings family should be able to own the Los Angeles Clippers if hes gone. All championship experiences in sports are not created equal. When a team is a pre-season favourite, or spends the most money, or is stacked with the best players in the game, its never quite as special. This is why the Kansas City Royals, who finally dropped a post-season game by losing 7-1 to San Francisco in the opening game of the World Series Tuesday night, have a chance to go down in baseball history as one of the more remarkable champions of this generation. Already the Royals have made winning look more fun than anyone else in sports. The Royals don’t just celebrate like millionaire athletes. They have that pinch-me-I-can’t-believe-this-is-happening-and-it-reminds-me-of-what-it-felt-like-to-be-a-kid-again kind of fun. They buy rounds of drinks for their fans in bars after games, they have a player who gave out playoff tickets to a fan on Twitter and agreed to go to dinner with him. It’s become fashionable in sports for players to place winning championships above all else in sports. The standard answer as to where an athlete should want to play? Why wherever gives him the best chance to win a championship, of course. Teams such as the New York Yankees have used that selling point since the dawn of free agency in the 1970s, with baseball’s other big spenders such as the Angels, Boston, or the Dodgers also opening their wallets to do what some might call invest in talent, and what others mmight call buy a winner.dddddddddddd Even in a salary cap league like the NBA, we saw The Big Three Found set things up, not just so that they would be able to play together, but so they could win a string of championships. That’s what it was all about and to a degree it worked. But the thrill of victory is never what it could be when one celebrates the accomplishments of a team that had the deck stacked in its favour before the season even began. The Heat winning two championships was maybe good for the NBA. But there was hardly anything magical about it, no sense of witnessing something that made you remember where you were when… It’s just a fact of life that the greatest celebrations in sports are always those that seem the least likely, the emotional energy inversely proportional to the likelihood of it occurring, for both participants and spectators. The greatest celebration I can recall ever seeing in sports? Probably the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team in what became known as the “miracle on ice,” a scene that appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine without a headline. The scene simply spoke for itself. The Royals aren’t quite that kind of story but their journey thus far does feel different. There’s a little more unbridled joy, a little more enjoy-it-while-it-lasts. Yes the Royals remind us that even in professional sports, there are different degrees of joy. « Последна публикация от Bellroll33 - юли 12, 2019, 10:03:59 am »
(SportsNetwork.com) - With injuries and losses mounting, the Toronto Maple Leafs get set to host the Dallas Stars Thursday night at the ACC. The latest Leaf to go down is centre Tyler Bozak who, according to head coach Randy Carlyle, will be out for an "extended period of time" with an oblique strain. Despite not participating in the morning skate, Phil Kessel is expected to be in the lineup. Joffrey Lupul -- out with a groin injury -- has also been ruled out, but said he could return Saturday night versus the Senators. The Maple Leafs are 0-3-2 over their last five games, a skid that was extended on Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks. Mason Raymond and Phil Kessel scored power-play goals, while James Reimer yielded three goals on 40 shots. Along with Bozak and Kessel, Colton Orr skipped the teams morning skate and has been ruled out with an elbow injury. Jonathan Bernier was also absent from the optional skate, suggesting that he will be the starter. Forward Jerry DAmigo has been recalled from the American Hockey Leagues Toronto Marlies and was on the ice with the team for the skate. He will likely take the place of Jerred Smithson, who was placed on waivers on Wednesday. Toronto has not won since Nov. 23 and has given up at least four goals in all but one game during its losing streak. "Weve got to find ways to keep the other team off the scoreboard a little better," said Reimer. "We battled back and tied it, but then they got the lead right back. It was a good game, but were disappointed that we lost." Kessels goal was his team-leading 15th of the season and 200th of his career. He is also tops on the club with 25 points, but was forced to leave practice early on Wednesday due to an undisclosed injury. The Stars have a point in four straight, going 2-0-2 in that span. They followed up consecutive shootout losses with Tuesdays 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Dallas won despite blowing a 3-0 lead and getting outshot 50-18. Kari Lehtonen made 47 saves and Antoine Roussel scored the winner on a penalty shot at 3:01 of the third period. "We got some lucky goals and some good bounces," said Roussel. "They played hard tonight, but we were able to get the two points." Alex Chiasson, Valeri Nichushkin and Erik Cole all scored for the Stars, who registered a season low for shots in a game and a season high for shots allowed in a game. Forward Ryan Garbutt sat out the third period with a lower-body injury and is questionable for tonight along with Tyler Seguin, who has missed the past two with concussion-like symptoms. Seguin leads Dallas with 12 goals on the season. The Stars had won four straight over the Maple Leafs before losing the past two meetings. That includes a 4-1 setback in Toronto on Nov. 22, 2010 and a 4-3 shootout defeat in Dallas in the most recent matchup on Nov. 25, 2011. Lehtonen is 2-6-1 with a 2.97 goals against average in his career versus Toronto, spanning nine games and eight starts. Jonathan Bernier is 2-2-1 against versus the Stars in five games with a 2.18 GAA. Deion Sanders Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was charged Friday with assault after being accused of choking his girlfriend during an argument. A criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court said his girlfriend told police they got into the argument early Thursday at his suburban Minneapolis home. The woman, who is not named in the complaint, told police he kicked down a locked bedroom door, grabbed her around the neck and slammed her against the wall, choking her for 15 to 20 seconds during which she could not breathe. "Victims eyes were watering and she felt like she was being strangled to death," the complaint alleges. The woman told police he then dropped her, and she called 911. According to the complaint, their relationship began last summer and they had been living together for eight months. Police said Thursday that she did not require medical treatment. Cunningham was charged with one felony count of domestic assault by strangulation. The 26-year-old remained jailed Friday evening with bail set at $40,000. It wasnt clear if he had an attorney. He was unable to join the Timberwolves when they left Thursday on a two-game road trip to Florida. The team issued a statement Thursday saying they were gathering more information. "The Minnesota Timberwolves organization takes the matter very seriously and does not condone the type of behaviour that is associated with this situation," the statement read. "However, we need to let the legal process run its course, and will have further comment at the appropriate time." Chris Lindstrom Falcons Jersey .Brazil midfielder Ricardo Goulart scored the winner in the 50th minute to give the defending champion a four-point advantage in the standings over second-place Sao Paulo, which beat rival Palmeiras 2-0.PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma wanted to send a message to his team, putting Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin exclusively on the same line. Consider it received. Attacking on offence early and often, the Penguins topped the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 on Saturday night as Jussi Jokinen scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to help give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference playoff series. Pittsburgh peppered Sergei Bobrovsky with 50 shots on goal, keeping the Blue Jackets goalie busy all night. "We competed hard," Crosby said. "We played desperate and really aggressive. Thats the game we have to play. Its not always going to result in 50 shots, but its our style of play." Chris Kunitz had a power-play goal and Kris Letang scored into an empty net for Pittsburgh, which has the upstart Blue Jackets on the verge of elimination with an opportunity to close out the series Monday during Game 6 in Columbus. "Their coach challenged them and they responded," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said. "Now, we have to do the same thing on Monday." It hasnt been easy for the Penguins, a team considered by many a Stanley Cup contender. Columbus, which began the series searching for its first playoff win in franchise history, twice rallied to stun the heavily favoured Penguins and outshot Pittsburgh three of the previous four games this series. Boone Jenner scored the lone goal for Columbus, which played its first Game 5 in franchise history. "I dont think anybody in this room would say theyre uncomfortable going into the next game," Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen said. "Like weve been saying, all the guys, we believe we can get this done." Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury recovered from a game-changing gaffe in Game 4 for the victory on Saturday, making 23 saves. Fleury is 4-1 in his last five games after a playoff overtime loss. "He was solid," Crosby said. "He showed his experience tonight." Bobrovsky stopped 48 shots for the Blue Jackets. "They were going to the net hard and obviously it was something they talked about, to make it hard on Bobrovsky," Richards said. "Its how they wanted to play the game." Crosby and Malkin, despite playing on the same line and combining for eight shots, still havent scored through five playoff games, but the message was sent. "I think we went into the game with a good idea that we were going to see that," Bylsma said. "With the matchup, we were able to give those guys a good opportunity to play together and be a force." Crosby, who led the league in scoriing with 104 points, hasnt scored in his last 10 playoff games overall, while Malkin has gone nine without a goal.dddddddddddd Richards hopes to extend the goal-less drought another game. "I have the last change, so its something I can possibly control a little bit better," Richards said. "But it makes for something different when you see (Crosby) and (Malkin) on the same line." The teams were tied at 1 entering the third, but Jokinen touched a backhand rebound past Bobrovsky along the far post 6:16 into the period. Letang scored an empty-netter with 1:01 to play to seal it. A 3-1 lead appeared to be a kiss of death for the team leading in the first four games of the series. Not on Saturday. Both sides endured wild momentum swings through the first four games, all decided by a 4-3 margin where the winning team rallied from a 3-1 deficit every time for the first time in league history. The Penguins twice had an opportunity to take a two-game lead in the series, while Columbus put Pittsburgh in a two-goal hole two times, only to come up short. The Penguins were seconds away from taking a 3-1 lead during the best-of-seven series in Game 5 when Fleury misplayed a puck behind the net, leading to Brandon Dubinskys tying goal that forced overtime and Nick Folignos innocent-looking wrist shot from the blue line that evaded Fleury and evened the series. Fleury, who was benched during Pittsburghs run to the conference finals last year, responded Saturday. "I think dealing with the pressure that he has, he was able to turn the page pretty quickly," Crosby said. "Thats what he needs to do, especially in the playoffs." Jenner helped the Blue Jackets score first Saturday with a power-play goal midway through the opening period. Fleury sprawled to cover a rebound at the top of the crease, but the puck came loose and Jenner jammed a shot home along the near post. Kunitz tied it with a second-period power-play goal, corralling a bouncing rebound in front of the net and backhanding it past Bobrovsky. Jokinens goal in the third put the Blue Jackets on the brink. "I expect nothing other than what theyve done all year, to respond," Richards said. NOTES: The NHL announced a 7 p.m. start for Game 6 in Columbus. ... PITTSBURGH -- New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault had trouble finding the words to describe goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. "Hes OK," Vigneault said finally with a small shake of his head. Except that is, in Game 7s. In Game 7s, Lundqvist is unbeatable. And so are the Rangers. Frustrating Sidney Crosby and the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins one final time, Lundqvist made 35 saves to lift New York to a 2-1 win on Tuesday night and give his resilient team an unlikely spot in the Eastern Conference finals. "I was so tired at the end," Lundqvist said after setting an NHL record with his fifth straight Game 7 triumph. "But it was just a great feeling when you know its a done deal and we did it." Brian Boyle and Brad Richards scored for New York, which rallied from a 3-1 series deficit for the first time in the franchises 88-year history. The Rangers did it behind Lundqvist, who stopped 102 of the final 105 shots he faced over the final three games as New York advanced to the conference finals for the second time in three years. The three-time All-Star is 10-2 when facing elimination. He was at his best during a mad scramble in front of the Rangers net with just over 5 minutes left, when he turned aside three shots from three different angles in a matter of seconds to preserve a one-goal lead. "He was OK with guys being on top of him as long as we didnt take penalties," New York defenceman Ryan McDonagh said. "He fought through screens, fought for loose pucks. He was incredible." The Rangers will play the winner of the Bruins-Canadiens series in the conference finals. That series is tied 3-3 and Game 7 is Wednesday night in Boston. Jussi Jokinen scored his team-high seventh goal of the post-season for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury made 18 saves for the Penguins, who outshot New York 36-20, but were outscored 10-3 over the final three games. Pittsburgh fell to 2-7 all time at home in Game 7s, including three such losses in the past five seasons. This one might have been the most painful for the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and coach Dan Bylsma that seemed pointed toward a dynasty after winning the 2009 Stanley Cup. Crosby, who led the league in scoring and is an MVP finalist, managed just one goal in 13 playoffs games. Just as importantly, five springs have now come and gone without Pittsburgh getting a Cup to bookend the one they hoisted that giddy night in Detroit and changes could be on the way. The Penguins are just 4-5 in playoff series over the past five seasons, with each loss coming to lower-seeded teams. Not exactly the expected outcome for a roster scattered with top-end talent that hasnt met expectations. While Bylsma declined to take the wide-angle view, his captain understood the dressing room could have a very different look next fall. "I think theres always questions," Crosby said. "When expectations are high and you dont win thats normal. Im sure there will be a lot of questions." There are none at the moment for the Rangers, who seem to thrive when their season boils down to three periods of hockey. Faced with their fifth Game 7 in the past three years, they did what they always do and took control early. Boyle quieted a raucous crowd 5:25 into the game at the end of a pretty breakout. Derek Dorsett hit Boyle streaking across the Pittsburgh blue line and Boyle tapped it between his legs to Dominic Moore, who waited a split second before sending it back to Boyle. The veteran forwards shot went between Fleurys legs for his second goal of the post-season. The Penguins responded by briefly taking over the game, their momentum cresting 4:15 into the second period when Jokinen pounded home a rebound off an Olli Maatta shot to tie the game. The goal seemed to get the Penguins almost too keyed up. Matt Niskanen went to the box for tripping and New Yorks power play, which was laughable when the series began, provided the clincher. Pittsburghs Brian Gibbons failed to get his stick down on a crossing pass from Brandon Sutter, nullifying a short-handed chance. The Rangers took off the other way, and with the Penguins still scrambling to get back into position, Richards took a pass from Martin St. Louis and flipped it into a wide-open net to make it 2-1 before the games midway point. Lundqvist did the rest. He robbed Pittsburghs James Neal at the doorstep late in the second period and fought off swarm after swarm over the final 20 minutes as the Rangers beat the Penguins in the playoffs for the first time in five post-season meetings. The first four series werent close. This one didnt appear to be either until the Rangers rallied behind St. Louis. The veteran forward, acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay, lost his mother suddenly last week. He raced home to Montreal to be with his family only to return for Game 5. New York responded with a 5-1 win that signalled a sea change in the series. The Rangers controlled Game 6 -- with St. Louis scoring the first goal on Mothers Day -- and Game 7 was more of the same. NOTES: Pittsburghs power play, which tied with Washington for tops in the league in the regular season, finished the series 1 for 20. ... The Rangers are 8-1 in their past eight Game 7s. ... Richards remained unbeaten (7-0) in Game 7s in his career. Cheap NFL Jerseys China . And Richard Bachman, their rookie goalie, is facing a penalty shot a few seconds after the opening face-off. Guthrie never let anyone get closer than two shots at Lake Malaren on Friday, and he started to pull away with a 20-foot birdie that broke three ways on the 17th. But he misjudged the speed of the 18th green on a long chip and narrowly missed a 10-foot par putt on the final hole. That put him at 8-under 136, four shots clear of six players. Ricardo Gonzalez didnt make a bogey until the final hole and still had a 67, the lowest round of the day. Also in a tie for second were Scott Jamieson (68), Paul Casey, Thongchai Jaidee and Craig Lee, who each shot 70. Simon Dyson, also tied for second Friday, was disqualified for a rules violation that was discovered Saturday morning. In the second round, he marked his ball just beyond the cup on No. 8. As he marked it, Dyson made a quick move to tamp down a spot on the green directly in his line. That violates Rule 16-1a. The infraction was pointed out to European Tour rules officials, who spoke to Dyson. Because he did not add the two-shot penalty, he was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. The disqualification was a big blow to the Englishman. He was No. 66 on the money list. Only the top 60 are eligible for the final event in Dubai. John Daly showed plenty of power but couldnt make a putt in his round of 74, which included a double bogey-birdie-bogey finish. He was six shots behind. For two days, Guthries first big trip in golf has been more than he could have imagined. He closed with a 64 in Las Vegas to tie for fifth and flew straight to Shanghai, leaving him just enough time to get over jet lag and see the Jack Nicklaus design. He didnt bring enough warm clothes, but at least he brought his game. He received a sponsors exemption more than a month ago, wanting to broaden his experience and learn to become a global golfer. It already is paying off. The relentless wind brought a drop in temperatures, yet Guthrie played the round in short sleeves. "I should have looked (the weather) up about Shanghai before I came here," he said.dddddddddddd "I only have one sweater here. Im wearing blue and pink today, so Im kind of out there already. I didnt want to put a green sweater on top of it. So I just dealt with being a little cold." There has been nothing cold about his game. Guthrie made his first bogey of the tournament with a tee shot that left him against the lip of a fairway bunker on No. 5, and he had to knock it out to the fairway. He dropped another shot on the 10th, and hit a poor shot that left him in an impossible spot on the 12th. Everything else, however, was solid. He rolled in a 15-foot birdie on the 11th, got up-and-down behind the green on the par-5 15th for a birdie and hit 6-iron into 20 feet on the 17th. Two more days like this and he could be staying in China longer than he planned. The BMW Masters is the start of "The Final Series" on the European Tour, four tournaments with at least $7 million in prize money that concludes the Race to Dubai. Guthrie, coming off his rookie season on the U.S. PGA Tour, has no stake in that. A win, however, would make him eligible for the HSBC Champions next week in Shanghai, a World Golf Championship that counts toward the FedEx Cup on the U.S. circuit. Only 18 players in the 77-man field were under par, a testament to the tough conditions. Rafa Cabrera-Bello didnt expect to be among them until he ran off five straight birdies late in his round for a 68, leaving him five shots behind. Ian Poulter got back in the game until two late bogeys forced him to settle for a 69. Poulter was at 1-under 143, along with Rory McIlroy, who bogeyed the last hole for a 72, and Lee Westwood (71). Graeme McDowell, in his first event since getting married at the end of September, was trying to push his way up the leaderboard until he bogeyed three of his last five. "Its been very tough the last two days in the wind," Casey said. "These are not conditions I expected or wanted. But it makes a very good, difficult golf course even more so. Its a great test of golf, which is I guess what we want. This is the Final Series for us in Europe. Its meant to be difficult." The Rangers entered Tuesdays anticipated showdown with victories in 13 of their previous 14 games, but couldnt maintain the momentum as Halak outplayed Henrik Lundqvist and the Isles finished with a 44-27 advantage in shots. Authentic Soccer Gear Store . -- Downcast before the final game of what had been a difficult road trip, the Ottawa Senators found a way to dig out a little momentum in the desert before heading home.NEW YORK -- After further review, the play stands as called. Not because it was right, but because referees werent allowed to determine it was wrong. NBA officials were already considering expanding referees instant replay options before two key plays in this post-season couldnt be changed even after refs saw them on the monitor. For now, the rules are clear about what referees can look at. But Commissioner Adam Silver said the league will "inevitably" reach a point where they can do more. "So far, in terms of all of our triggers, weve tried to maintain a line of what is clearly objectively ascertainable," Silver said Thursday. "You know, foot on the line or not, buzzer or not. My sense is where well end up is giving the referees more discretion over what they can look at once we go to replay." Silvers comments to a group of Associated Press Sports Editors came hours before Atlantas Jeff Teague tossed in a wild 3-pointer as he dribbled left with the shot clock winding down and the Hawks leading Indiana by six. When officials later reviewed the shot to see if Teague was behind the arc, it was clear he had first stepped out of bounds before shooting. As Indiana players screamed for the basket to be overturned, referee Tony Brothers explained that it couldnt be. The Golden State Warriors hung on for a 109-105 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 1 of their series after a similar replay issue. When officials went to the monitor to review a ball out of bounds with 18.9 seconds left and Golden State leading by two, they could see that the Warriors Draymond Green had first fouled Chris Paul. However, because that wasnt reviewable, all they could rule was the ball had gone off of Paul. Silver said its confusing for viewers to see something obvious on replay, yet the officials appear to have "blinders" on and do nothing about it. "I think the most difficult area now, even for our fans to understand, is when an official can go to replay and everyone can see something that looks like a foul or wasnt a foul, but yet the official is restricted from being able to apply, in essence, his judgment on the play," Silver said.dddddddddddd"And I think thats an area that I think inevitably were going to reach, where an official is going to need to have some more discretion." But senior vice-president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe said its a bit of a "slippery slope" in determining how far officials can look backward before the play they are reviewing. "Those are things that when you start to have subjective calls and youre looking at a lot of things, and youre giving more discretion on what to look at, those are the problems and the issues that you try to figure out," VanDeWeghe said. "But like Adam said, giving the referees a little bit more discretion when theres something obvious that happens within the context of the foul, you want to get it right." Clippers coach Doc Rivers, a member of the leagues competition committee, said the committee talked about it last year. They apparently had the same concerns as VanDeWeghe. "Its a hard one. It really is," Rivers said. "We all want them to get everything right. But how far does that go when you start doing that? How far do you go on that? Did he step on the line? Well, maybe he fouled him. But there was a travel down there. Look, there. At some point, is it just on the ball? Is it off the ball? It can go a long way. Just think, right now were looking at one play and it takes five minutes. If you start doing that, it may take forever." The competition committee will meet again for two days in July to recommend any changes, which would have to be approved by owners. VanDeWeghe agreed with Silver that the NBA will use more replay. "Its always a balancing act at the end of the day because we want to get the calls right, want to have the players decide the game, get the calls right, but also we dont want to have a four-hour game, so were continually balancing it," VanDeWeghe said. "But if we can utilize replays more, if we can utilize data more, were going to do it to make our game better." AP Sports Writer Antonio Gonzalez in San Francisco contributed to this report. За форума и сайта като цяло / Canadiens region can watch the game on TSN Habs
« Последна публикация от Bellroll33 - юли 12, 2019, 09:34:16 am »
Daniel Briere makes his return to Philadelphia tonight when the Montreal Canadiens visit the struggling Flyers. Viewers in the Canadiens region can watch the game on TSN Habs at 7pm et/8pm at. The game is also available on TSN Radio 690 in Montreal. The Canadiens have had a little more time to reflect on their shutout loss to the Los Angeles Kings two days ago. The Habs carried a five-game winning streak into Tuesdays home contest against the Kings and were blasted by a 6-0 margin. Carey Price yielded four goals on 16 shots faced in almost 25 1/2 minutes of action before being replaced by Peter Budaj, who yielded two goals on 14 shots faced. It was Montreals first regulation setback since a 1-0 loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 16, snapping a 10-game point streak (9-0-1). "Theres nothing we can do after a loss like that," mused Habs head coach Michel Therrien. "Their second goal was a case of poor coverage. You have to give that team a lot of credit, but we have to put it aside and start all over again. If we had scored early, it might have been different. Were all disappointed." Tonights game marks a return to the Wells Fargo Center for Briere, who signed with the Canadiens this past offseason after having his contract bought out by the Flyers. Following a productive three-plus seasons in Buffalo, Briere hit the free agent market in the summer of 2007 and drew interest from a number of teams. The Quebec-born forward, though, drew the ire of Montreal natives when he decided to ink an eight-year, $52 million deal with the Flyers. Briere netted 124 goals with 159 assists for 283 points in 364 games with Philadelphia, but had just six goals and 16 points in 34 games last season. He ran out of goodwill stemming from his 30-point playoff output during the Flyers run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010 and had the final two years of his contract bought out this past summer. That gave the 35-year-old the opportunity to sign a two-year deal with the Canadiens but he has struggled this season with just 10 points in 22 games. "Im expecting both the best and the worst from the fans. Ive been treated in different ways by the crowd during my career, so Im ready for pretty much anything," Briere told Montreals website. "Ill have a chance to play in front of my kids and a few good friends, so itll be easy to find the motivation to do well." The forward faced the Flyers in Montreal back on Oct. 5 and did not register a point in a 4-1 win. Price stopped 22 shots to improve to 8-8-0 with a 2.71 goals against average in his career versus the Flyers. The victory was just Montreals third in its past 11 meetings with the Flyers and it has lost five in a row in Philadelphia. The Flyers would love to extend that home winning streak over the Canadiens following a 2-4-0 road trip. They dropped the final three games of the swing, capped with last nights 7-2 setback at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks scored five goals in the second period, while Jakub Voracek and Steve Downie had the tallies for the Flyers. Ray Emery, part of Chicagos Stanley Cup-winning club last season, was shelled for six goals on 18 shots in just over two periods of work to take the loss. Steve Mason made four stops in the third. "You cant make excuses," Emery said. "As a whole, we have to play better in the second." Mason should get the start tonight and it would be the second of his career versus the Habs. He hasnt faced them since Nov. 7, 2008 with Columbus, stopping 34 shots in a victory. Emery had made 30 saves in the loss to Montreal on Oct. 5. The first overall pick in this summers NHL entry draft said that a fourth-place finish at least years world junior championship means everyone vying for a spot on the Canadian squad to play on home soil later this year is on equal footing -- himself included. "Theres something left on the table," said Ekblad of the opportunity squandered in Malmo, Sweden that ended abruptly with a bronze medal game loss to Russia. "Obviously were coming into this with positivity, but we lost last year," added Ekblad, a defenceman for the Ontario Hockey Leagues Barrie Colts. "None of us, I think, have earned the right to say we deserve a spot again." Head Coach Benoit Groulx says thats exactly what he wants to hear. "Thats the attitude we like -- hes coming here as the first pick overall and hes first on every drill and hes probably the hardest working player on the ice," said Groulx, the Gatineau Olympiques coach who served as an assistant-coach for Canada in Sweden. Ekblad is among 39 players in suburban Montreal this week taking part in development camp that runs until Aug. 8. The Canadian players will play in exhibition games in Sherbrooke, Que. and at Concordia University in Montreal against teams from Russia and the Czech Republic. Groulx says he wants to see how players will adapt to what theyre being taught during practice and how theyll put those lessons to the test during games. Everyone will get a chance to play. "We want to be a team, we want to play as a team, we want four lines going hard, playing the same way," Groulx said. "This is our challenge and this is their challenge to be fitting on this team in a specific role." The coach said this week is just the first step in a very long process to decide on who will make up the Canadian squad that will play at the world junior championship in Montreal and Toronto at the end of the year. Ekblad is among a group of ten players at the camp who are back. The group also includes fellow first-round pick Sam Reinhart and young phenom Connor McDavid, the only draft-eligible player among them. Groulx had praise for all returnees who have been exhibiting leadership qualities since camp began Sunday night.dddddddddddd "Theyre here, you can tell their ready and they dont take anything for granted," Groulx said. For McDavid in particular, its expected to a pressure-packed year. The Erie Otters forward is projected to be a top NHL draft pick in 2015. McDavid says hes got plenty of people around him keeping him grounded and helping him keep the focus on the task at hand. "At the end of the day, youre here for the world junior championship and nothing else," the soft-spoken McDavid said. "Youre not here for your draft stock or anything like that, youre just here to represent Team Canada and thats it." Canada hasnt won a gold medal in since 2009, when it won its last of five straight. The country hasnt had a medal since 2012 and has back-to-back fourth place finishes in the past two years. "Even to this day, I know a lot of the returning guys are disappointed and have the drive and fire to improve on last year," said Reinhart, a first-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres. "If we were all privileged enough to play, I know everyone is going to be motivated to get the best result possible." The 11-day tournament in Montreal and Toronto opens on Boxing Day and runs to Jan. 5, with the final at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Its up in the air how many of the players at camp this week will still be eligible to play come December. Many, like Ekblad, expect to challenge for NHL spots. In the case of this years first overall pick, Ekblad made it clear he wants to secure an everyday spot on the Florida Panthers. But he assures that hell be ready and willing if he ends up suiting up for Canada. "We dont know whats going to happen with him (Ekblad) but one thing we know is that if hes with us at Christmas time, hell have the respect of his peers, which is key, and the respect of his coaches," Groulx said. NOTES: Thirty-nine players of the 41 players invited are expected on the ice this week. The exceptions are Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Jonathan Drouin, who isnt obliged to be here because it is his third invite. Vancouver Canucks prospect Jake Virtanen is present but is recovering from an injury and wont be on the ice. Tyler Bertuzzi didnt dress Monday due to illness. PHILADELPHIA - The Reds are still hoping they wont have to put Joey Votto on the disabled list. The 2010 NL MVP missed his third straight game Sunday because of a left knee injury. Manager Bryan Price said after the 8-3 loss to the Phillies that "we dont want to DL him and find out in two or three days hes ready to play." The Reds open a three-game series at the Nationals on Monday, and Price couldnt say whether Votto even would be in Washington, let alone play. The manager says: "As long as were somewhat comfortable having a four-man bench, we wont have to make a decision" on the DL. The Charlotte Bobcats owner praised his team during a pregame locker room speech Friday night, but warned his players its only going to get tougher from here on out. Jordan spoke directly about the Bobcats potentially making the playoffs -- something that seemed inconceivable five months ago for a team that was 7-59 and 21-61 the previous two seasons. "He talked to them about the progress that he had seen and praised them for their attitude and togetherness as a team," coach Steve Clifford said. "And he let them know, which I thought was perfect, the toughest part is ahead. We made our first step and it now gets tougher. It was a great message." A message that apparently inspired the Bobcats, currently seventh in the Eastern Conference. Al Jefferson scored 28 points, Kemba Walker had 20 points and 14 assists, and the Bobcats (29-33) defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-92 for their sixth straight win at home, surpassing their win total from the previous two seasons combined. It was an important win for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 this season against the Cavaliers and now own the tiebreaker against both Detroit and Cleveland, the ninth- and 10th-place teams in the East. "If that dont motivate you, I dont know what will," Jefferson said of Jordan addressing the team. Clifford said he asked Jordan to speak to the players before the game and he gladly accepted the invitation. He said players were "locked in" to every word Jordan spoke. "Lets face it, if youre coaching anywhere, he would be the first guy that you would say, Would you mind coming to talk to our team?" Clifford said. "Im saying hes our owner and, shoot, you are always looking for a little edge. I thought it was perfect." Said Jefferson: "He told us he was proud of us, but we have a long way to go. We cant be happy with what we have done so far. We have to continue to grow and get better." It was a huge loss for Cleveland. Dion Waiters and Luol Deng each scored 19 points for the Cavaliers, who began the night 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the East. They now trail Charlotte by 5 1/2 games. "It hurts," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Especially knowing where were sitting and where theyre sittingg right now, its a tough loss.dddddddddddd" Jefferson shot 12 of 18 from the field and reached 20 points for the 22nd time in his last 24 games. Chris Douglas-Roberts added 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and a season-high nine rebounds. Charlottes six-game home winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run in March 2010. "There are 20 games left and its time to start talking about the playoffs -- about not just qualifying but getting our team game-ready for the playoffs and guys getting their individual games ready," Clifford said. The Bobcats defeated the Cavaliers by six points in each of the two previous meetings this season without Jefferson, who sat out both games with a sprained ankle. Jefferson had 38 points against Miami and 34 in a win over Indiana this week, and was a big factor from the outset against the Cavaliers. He used a series of pump fakes and up-and-under moves to fool the Cavaliers, and continued to knock down his mid-range jump shot. The 6-foot-10 centre scored 18 points in the first half on 8-of-10 shooting to help Charlotte build a 55-50 lead at the break despite the Cavaliers shooting 55 per cent from the field. Cleveland took an 81-80 lead on a pair of free throws by Waiters with 7 minutes left in the game. But Walker matched that with two free throws of his own and knocked down a jumper to spark a 15-5 run that put Charlotte safely ahead. The Cavaliers shot just 32 per cent in the second half, and Charlotte held Kyrie Irving to 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Irving came in averaging 24.5 points in his previous four games in Charlotte. Waiters said its not too late for the Cavaliers to make a playoff push. But theyll need to play much better than they did Friday night. "We have a chance and a shot, so why not? Why not us?" Waiters said. "Weve got to have a sense of urgency. The clock is ticking. The games are running out. Making the playoffs is right there and weve got a great opportunity." NOTES: Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson missed his third straight game with a right calf strain. ... Anderson Varejao (back) and C.J. Miles (ankle) were back at practice this week but didnt make the trip to Charlotte, which meant Spencer Hawes and Tristan Thompson were left to defend Jefferson. ... Josh McRoberts added 11 points and seven assists for the Bobcats. « Последна публикация от Bellroll33 - юли 12, 2019, 09:25:51 am »
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets quarterback situation is no mystery. And, if it was, everyone has gotten enough clues by now to solve it. While no one who has a say in the decision-making process has come right out and said it, it has become very clear that Geno Smith is the starting quarterback and Michael Vick is the backup. Today, tomorrow and next month. And its offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinwegs task to make it all work. "Heres my job, this is my responsibility and my duty, really: Ive got to continue to progress the young quarterback thats got 16 games under his belt," Mornhinweg said Wednesday. "That has to happen." Thats why, despite Vicks extensive experience and familiarity with Mornhinwegs offence, Smith is getting the bulk of the work with the starting offence in minicamp and will continue to do so in training camp in late July. "Things can change, as you know," Mornhinweg said. "Theyll start out very similarly. Geno has gotten, and hell get about, lets say 70-75 per cent of the reps with the 1s. Geno, Ill get him a couple reps there with the second group as well." Its not a major revelation, especially after Mornhinweg recently acknowledged that the snaps wouldnt be equal between the two quarterbacks -- confirming Vicks assertion that it wasnt necessarily an "open competition." The two will continue to compete, of course, with Smith getting the chance to end any debate with a solid showing this summer. From what Mornhinweg has seen, he believes that could end up being the case. "Last year about this time ... things were spinning on him a little bit, which was certainly anticipated," Mornhinweg said. "We started our off-season, hes got the bull by the horns (and) hes driving it. Quite different that way. "Very confident, very sure of himself with each play." Last season, Smith threw 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions after being thrust into the starting job when Mark Sanchez was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Cutting down on the turnovers has been the major focus since December. Quarterbacks coach David Lee has worked closely with Smith, who is getting rid of the ball a lot faster than he was at any point a year ago. "Hes thrown a couple of interceptions since OTAs and hadnt thrown any in minicamp," Lee said. "Of course, its not 82,000 (fans) out there and nine million people watching on television. And thats really where youve got to evaluate a quarterback is in those games. "Thats when you really know how much better hes gotten when you get to the ballgames." But if Smith struggles or is injured, Mornhinweg is counting on Vick -- who thrived under him during their four seasons together in Philadelphia -- to be able to step in seamlessly and lead the offence. "We just have to get Michael Vick playing at the high level that he played at in the past within this system," Mornhinweg said. "So, he needs some reps." Both Smith and Vick are getting used to a revamped wide receiver corps, which has Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and a host of others trying to earn roster spots. That might be where the real competition is with the Jets -- not with the guys throwing the football, but the guys catching it. "We are extremely deep at that spot," Mornhinweg said. "So weve got more than a handful of guys that can play at a high level." David Nelson and Jacoby Ford are two veterans vying for spots, while youngsters Greg Salas, Clyde Gates, Michael Campbell and Saalim Hakim and draft picks Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa are also in the mix. "Weve got four to five guys total that I know can play at a real high level, that will catch the ball consistently, will separate consistently," Mornhinweg said. "We have three to four guys who can really run. I mean fast, fast. ... Then we have another handful of guys, many of them young players that have shown some things where, this is going to be a heck of a competition here for some roster spots and some playing time and being able to help our football team." Coach Rex Ryan is also intrigued by a promising group of tight ends, including Jeff Cumberland, second-round pick Jace Amaro and the developing Zach Sudfeld. "I could see Marty being real creative with this group," Ryan said. Running back Chris Johnson is expected to be ready to go when training camp opens after recovering from off-season knee surgery. Chris Ivory rolled an ankle Wednesday, but Ryan said it was nothing serious. If healthy, Johnson and Ivory could form one of the leagues most lethal backfield duos. "We need to get Chris Johnson on the field," Mornhinweg said. "He needs some reps, certainly, but it is going to be exciting. At least Im excited." Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (5) - Simply put, Lundqvist was brilliant.UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Detroit Red Wings had just enough time to salvage a point. They still havent figured out how to make the most of overtime. Pavel Datsyuk, in his 800th NHL game, scored his second goal of the night with 42.5 seconds left in regulation, but the Red Wings couldnt turn it into a win as they were beaten 5-4 by the New York Islanders in a shootout on Saturday night. The Red Wings have lost six straight overall, five in a row in extra time, and three consecutive in shootouts -- including two on back-to-back nights. "If we hadnt gone through the last five, six games, this point would be pretty good," forward Henrik Zetterberg said. "Right now its tough. We cant find a way to win a game. I think we battled hard. It was a back-to-back game and we found a way to come back at the end. "Overall, I think its a good point, but we were right there to get two points." The Red Wings arrived in New York around 2 a.m. Saturday after losing at home to Washington on Friday. Detroit is 1-7 after regulation this season, 0-4 in shootouts. "We found a way to get a point," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We obviously have to get better. We will get better. Its pretty obvious weve got to win in regulation because the shootout is killing us. "Its like anything in life, it gets in your head a little bit. To me weve got to be hard-headed and mentally tough. The standings could be a lot different for us if we won all these games, especially these shootouts." Kevin Poulin was the difference for the Islanders after he replaced the injured Evgeni Nabokov in the first period. Neither team could hold the lead until he finally shut the door in the tiebreaker, denying Henrik Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi. "I love this," Poulin said. "I was not nervous in the shootout, was pretty excited actually. I felt comfortable. You have to be ready to jump in. Thats why I play hockey." Frans Nielsen scored the only shootout goal for the Islanders, who had dropped five of six. "Kevin really stepped up for us," Islanders captain John Tavares said. "We kept calm and it paid off in the end." Cal Clutterbuck had given the Islanders a 4-3 lead when he had the second deflection of Aaron Ness shot from the left point past Gustavsson 4:43 into the third for his second goal. The Islanders are 6-0-1 against Detroit in the past seven meetings and havent been beaten by the Red Wings in regulation since November 2003. New York outshot Detroit 15-4 in the third period and 6-1 in overtime. Tavares had a goal and assist to stretch his point and assist streaks to five games. Casey Cizikas and Brock Nelson both scored tying goals in the second period for thhe Islanders.dddddddddddd Poulin made 19 saves in relief of Nabokov, who injured a groin. Darren Helm and Johan Franzen had the other goals for the Red Wings, and Gustavsson stopped 37 shots through overtime in his first outing in place of Jimmy Howard since Oct. 23. Both teams were held at bay throughout most of the second period, but then combined for three goals in a span of 1:20 in the final three minutes of the frame. The Islanders got even 2-2 when the Red Wings poorly played a rush into their zone. Matt Martin carried the puck deep and fanned on a shot, but Colin McDonald got his stick on the puck and put it on Gustavsson. Cizikas got to that rebound and scored his second of the season and second in two games with 2:10 remaining. But for the second time, Islanders fans barely had a chance to celebrate before the Red Wings responded. Helm brought the puck into the New York zone and fed a pass to Franzen on the left wing. Franzen glided from the circle into the middle of the ice and snapped a drive past Poulin just 33 seconds later. This time it was the Islanders turn to answer quickly, and they did it 20 seconds into Luke Glendenings tripping penalty. Nelson scored with a second poke with 49.5 seconds remaining. The Red Wings wiped out their early 1-0 deficit just nine seconds after they fell behind, and knocked out Nabokov in the process. Helm won a faceoff against Tavares, right after the Islanders captain put New York in front at 4:03 with his ninth goal. The Red Wings controlled the puck in their zone until defenceman Jonathan Ericsson found Helm with a long lead pass that led to a breakaway. Helm came in on Nabokov, made a move that caused the goalie to do a split, and scored his second of the season at 4:12 to tie it 1-1. The 38-year-old Nabokov was playing for the first time in four games and the second in six. He was assisted by a trainer in the crease before getting up on his skates and gingerly skating while hunched over to the tunnel leading to the dressing room. Nabokov came into Saturday with a 5-5-3 record and 3.24 goals-against average. "He means a lot to this team, all of us," Tavares said. "Not everyone knows how much he does for us in this room. Hes important." Datsyuk made it 2-1 with 1:42 left in the first period, scoring a power-play goal with Bertuzzi screening Poulin in front. The Toronto Maple Leafs are now the only team Datsyuk hasnt scored a goal against. NOTES: The Red Wings recalled Glendening from Grand Rapids (AHL) to fill in for forward Daniel Alfredsson, who missed his second straight game because of a groin injury. ... The Islanders failed to score on a 4-minute power play that spanned the second and third periods after Franzen was called for high-sticking. What a difference a year makes. With Opening Day less than a week away, the excitement surrounding the Toronto Blue Jays is much different than it was a year ago. Going into last season, many believed this team could win the World Series, or at the very least, make the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.  This, of course, never came to fruition and the Jays have gone from pre-season favourites to almost an afterthought in the baseball world.   Their window to win with this group of players might only have a season or two left, so the time to be successful is now. Having said that, what are your expectations for the 2014 Toronto Blue Jays? The Jays Opening Day roster wont look drastically different from 2013. Aside from losing the much-maligned J.P. Arencibia (replacing him with Dioner Navarro) to the Texas Rangers and Josh Johnson to the San Diego Padres, the Jays have pretty much stood pat. Will another year of the same crew result in a similar outcome, or, with a season together already under their belts, is it possible Toronto can find their grove and be a competitive ball club? The pitching rotation has been a major question mark this spring with R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, and the oft-injured Brandon Morrow returning to this years staff. Youngster Drew Hutchison, 23, who missed last season due to Tommy John surgery and long-time Blue Jay Dustin McGowan round out the rotation. Will the Jays go as far as their starters take them? How much faith do you have in this group to stay healthy and produce wins? It looks as though the AL East is as strong as its ever been with the Orioles, Yankees, Red Sox and Rays making improvements to their ball clubs over the off-season. Are the Jays good enough to compete in the toughest division in baseball? There is the opinion that the expectations – and pressure – were so high for the team in 2013, that they were set up to fail. With the team not having the weight of the world on their shoulders this time around, its possible the team could pull a 180 and play like they were supposed to last year. So, what are you expecting from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014? As always, its Your! Call. Nike Sneakers Cheap China .
